Pajara Information

The municipality of Pajara, one of the oldest on the island of Fuerteventura, dates back to the beginning of the XVI century. It was born thanks to the settling of cattle raisers and fishermen. The total surface of the municipality is 386,3 Km2, with the longest coastline in Spain. The registered population is around 18.000 inhabitants but there are in fact about 30.000 people living in the municipality.
Our municipality is privileged to have everything tourists demand: sun, beaches, quietness etc...which has revolutionized our way of life. We have become part of the international network of tourist destinations. This amazing transformation has forced the Council of Pájara to create necessary services. It is our daily task to respond to these demands, at the same time we should look to future developements, necessary for our community.
We firmly believe that we should back the primary sector of our economy (agriculture, cattle and fishing) and continue modernizing industry and commerce without affecting the inheritance of our ancesters: culture and environment. Finding an authentic union between the different parametres is a challenge our task presents at the head of this institution.

This is really a lovely place to wander around, with it's trees and shrubs full of birds and insects, it's numerous small gardens and squares, and of course the church with it's Aztec stone-carved decorations above the main entrance. If you are lugging children around it may be of interest to know that Pajara also has a swimming pool.

The volcano arose from the sea and the island from the volcano. The wind and water shapped the rest. Enormous lava constructions succumbed to erosion. Only the enormous headlands of the massifs of Jandía, Betancuria and Cardón remained standing.Thousands of years of slow work dismounted the mountains, leaving them as sinuous hills, opening up valleys allowing water to flow down gently to the sea, transporting sand to deposit all along the coast of the municipality of Pajara, creating the most extensive, spectacular beaches in europe.

Few places in the world have such a magnificent, peculiar landscape like what can be discovered in our extensive territory, each one clearly separated by La Pared isthmus.
